Andy Reid one win away from matching the all-time Chiefs coaching record

We are nearing the halfway point of another hugely successful regular season for Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Although they’re coming off a disappointing offensive showing in Denver last weekend, losing 24-9, the reigning Super Bowl champs still appear to be well on their way to returning to the playoffs.

They’re 6-2 heading into this weekend’s action in Frankfurt against the Miami Dolphins, with three more victories than the second-place Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West.

Andy Reid Closing in on a record

Many would attribute the Chiefs’ success over the past few seasons to the stellar offensive play of MVP Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce and for good reason, as the two have been nearly unstoppable since teaming up.

If you followed this team before 2018, though, you would know how big of a role Reid played in transforming them into a winner before Mahomes and company arrived.

Andy Reid and winning have always seemed to go hand-in-hand since he first became an NFL head coach.

Before taking over the Chiefs, Reid spent 14 seasons as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, guiding them to the playoffs nine times, along with a Super Bowl appearance, while only posting three losing seasons.

When he joined Kansas City before the 2013 campaign, the franchise was a mess, going 2-14 the previous year under Romeo Crennel, having endured just one winning season from 2007-2012.

To say that Reid had a massive challenge on his hands would be an understatement, and there were even doubts about his capability after the Eagles went 4-12 in his final campaign.

Reid, though, has quickly rebuilt this franchise into a winner, making the playoffs with a record of 11-5 in 2013, and things have only gotten better from there.

Now in his 11th year as the Chiefs head coach, Reid has only missed the playoffs once (2014), while he has yet to have a losing season in Kansas City.

The Chiefs under Reid have been the model of consistency, particularly in the regular season, collecting double-digits for wins in all but one campaign (nine in 2014).

On Sunday in Frankfurt, the Kansas City boss could add his name to the Chiefs’ history books should they emerge victorious against the Miami Dolphins.

With 123 career regular-season victories on the Chiefs sidelines, Reid is one back of the all-time franchise record currently held by the late Hank Stram.

Stram will always have a special place in the hearts of Chiefs supporters and historians, having led them to a victory in Super Bowl IV, the first for this franchise, but Reid’s accomplishments since arriving eclipse what he achieved.

It took Stram 12 years to rack up the Chiefs regular season record for wins, so Reid’s likely to surpass that in year 11, while Stram only made the playoffs four times as their head coach.

Stram won three division titles during his Chiefs tenure, while Reid has led his team to seven in a row; while the Kansas City Hall of Fame coach (Stram) had a winning percentage of .614 during his KC tenure, third all-time behind the late Marty Schottenheimer (.634) and Reid (.724).

If it hasn’t crossed people’s minds by now, it seems like it’s time to add Reid to the conversation as the greatest coach in Chiefs history.
