While the NFL teams continue to focus on the current season, looking for a place in Super Bowl LIX, the league is already determining the venue for the 2028 final.
According to Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, the NFL plans to announce Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta as the home of the 2028 Super Bowl soon.
The decision won’t be confirmed until October, when the owners of the 32 franchises will meet for the official vote.
This could be the second time since its opening in 2017 that the stadium hosts the big deciding game.
Home of previous Super Bowls
The first time the stadium in Atlanta hosted the SB, the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams to win Super Bowl LIII in 2019.
In addition, the state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz Stadium will also host the college football season finale in 2025, and several games of the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Georgia has hosted two other Super Bowls in its history. In 1994 and 2000, the championship was decided at the Georgia Dome, the former home of the Atlanta Falcons. The franchise has never managed to play in a final hosted on its home turf.
If the rumours are confirmed, the NFL will have already decided on the venue for the next four finals. In 2025, it will be the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
The following two years, Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, both in the state of California.
Scheme behind choosing who hosts the SB
The process of choosing the venues takes place three to five years before the game takes place, so that the cities have time to prepare.
League franchise owners hold a meeting with the NFL and a vote takes place among the members to determine the Super Bowl stadium.
In the past, cities that wanted to host the big event presented their proposals, which were deliberated and voted on at the league’s owners’ meetings.
However, the new process no longer allows cities to bid for the game – the NFL now chooses the potential candidates.
The host city for the event is chosen in advance by the NFL regardless of whether or not the city’s team will participate in the deciding game.
So the order for the next Super Bowls will be: LXIX in New Orleans, LX in Santa Clara and LXI in Los Angeles.
It will be the 11th time that NOLA has hosted a Super Bowl, tying with Miami as the cities that have hosted the event the most.
